BBC News: The Dangers of Indoor Air Pollution

A leading respiratory specialist based in Southampton has raised the alarm over indoor air pollution, arguing that its dangers are widely underestimated. In a recent article on the BBC News website, the expert Dr Thom Daniels, from University Hospital Southampton (UHS) highlights that pollutants inside homes and workplaces, such as dust, cooking fumes, cleaning agents, and furniture emissions, can significantly affect respiratory health. The concern is that these toxins often go unnoticed compared to outdoor air pollution.

The physician emphasised that indoor exposure can worsen symptoms for individuals with asthma, allergies, and other lung conditions. While outdoor air quality frequently dominates headlines, it’s the toxins trapped within enclosed spaces that may pose an equally serious, but neglected, health risk.

In recognition of Clean Air Day on June 19, 2025, the expert’s comments were released to underline the importance of improving indoor air environments through better ventilation, low-emission household products, and strategies to reduce the accumulation of airborne particulates.
